Feature Film – Call for Submission – Male Contemporary Dancer who can act

Fountains

Fountains is a light romantic comedy about how our misdeeds come back to haunt us. It focuses on the interactions between Elisa, Sachin, Zac and Diego. Dance plays an important part in the film, expressing the emotions of the actors and a taste of things to come. The interactions between the key characters set into motion a chain of events that affect their lives deeply.

This is a call for submission for the key character of Diego. The roles of Elisa, Sachin and Zac have already been filled.

Diego is a gay male (ages 18-32). He is a sensitive, insecure and a talented contemporary dancer. His role calls for a contemporary dance piece, approximately 5 minutes long. Thus the actor playing Diego would be a contemporary dancer who would be comfortable choreographing or working with a choreographer. The 5-minute dance piece is with a female dancer with the theme of misunderstanding and repetition. The submission requires a showreel – preferably showing both your dance and acting abilities. The submission will be reviewed and the successful applicants will be contacted individually.

This is a paid job – payment can be discussed with the director.

Shoot dates will be in Feb/March 2010 after the cast has been finalized. Email is the preferred method of showreel submission.

Hiring a DOP/Cinematographer

Four Lives, Fountains and a Twist

Hiring a DOP/Cinematographer

Fountains is an indie film that will be shot around Sydney in February/March 2010. Locations are Hyde Park, Sydney Uni, Fort Denison and Kings Cross. I am looking to hire a DP/Cameraman. I have all the equipment needed – in terms of cameras and lenses. It needs you to complete the project! Shoot hours have been chosen so there is adequate outdoor lighting.

Fountains is a romantic comedy. One particular shot is a matrix-style bullet-time sequence with 55 cameras. I bought and rigged the cameras over the past year and have just finished testing it. I will also be using HDR Timelapse techniques for some shots. This is quite interesting on a technical basis, and the DOP/Cinematographer will also get to work with this equipment. Our primary camera is a Canon 7D. Backup cameras are 1x HV20 and 1x HV30. Mics are Sony HiMDs for lav mics and a Rode VideoMic.

Shoot hours will be dawn – 5-7 a.m. weekdays at Hyde Park, some nights around the Hyde Park fountain, evenings approx 3-7 p.m. at Sydney Uni (with the Sydney Uni Gymnastics club), a single weekday at Fort Denison, half a day at Kings Cross and half a day of filming dance sequences at a theater. We will need to travel over a day to a park where there are lots of kangaroos, I have to scope out some places close to Sydney to figure out exactly where. We can work out the hours together so that the actors and DP can both be available.

In true indie style, we are not using film permits, hence there is a possibility that a shoot may not occur and we get kicked out. Or we may not have access on the day.

If someone has experience, or knows someone who does KAP (Aerial Photography) that is a bonus.

This will be a paid job, and I would consider availability and flexible hours as well as the extent of experience. I cannot pay industry rates, so an ideal candidate would be someone who finds this project interesting, and views it as a way to gain experience and work with interesting technology whilst getting paid. Since some shots will have to be planned on the day, someone living in and around Sydney would be preferred.

DIY – Rubber hose for a Flexible Track Dolly

For a flexible dolly track solution, I looked at various options to get the cheapest heavy duty rubber hose I could. The lowest I could work with, seemed to be 2.5 cm or 1-inch O.D. rubber hose. That corresponds to 3/4″ or 20 mm ID black heater hose. I called around for prices and got a really good deal from AutoZone Dulwich Hill (Newtown). I got 60 m total for about 70/- for a reel of 15m. A total of 280/- bucks. All prices in AUD. From experience, irrespective of the exchange rate, Americans get half the price we get. So just divide the price by half, for the price in USD. For Euros, you usually pay the same amount we pay, but in Euros – since Europe is so expensive to live in.

For most people there will be no need for so much hose. However, I need to film 2 dancers waltzing around a fountain for my directorial venture, Fountains. That needed a really long dolly track.

I needed a solution to join 2x 15m hoses to 1 single 30m hose. This was accomplished with garden hose joiners from bunnings for 4 bucks each. There will be a bump when the camera passes over this joint, however that should be easily fixed in post.

I sealed one end with a rubber furniture end cap ( a cheaper solution than the proper end -cap hydraulic seals). I use reducing hydraulic connector to go down to 1/8-inch and then attached a auto tire nipple for inflating the hose. This is the same as a universal bicycle nipple.

I tested the assembly after inflating by immersion in a bucket full of water. When I could not see any bubbles, I left the inflated hose overnight to check if it still was inflated the next morning.

I bought a garden hose storage reel on wheels from Bunnings and took out the wheels.

Finally, I used heavy duty metal twist ties from Aldi to hold down the hose.

Now I have 2 parallel 30m flexible dolly tracks.

Look at my second post about the camera track that goes on this dolly.
